With its emerald greenery and its religious pagoda and shrines, Red Hill is a landmark of the city. At an elevation of 910 meters (3,000 feet) above sea level, it stands magnificently at the center of Urumqi City.

At sunrise and sunset, the hill looks red for it reflects the red light from the sun, so it was named Red Hill. The hill stretches from east to west and its dominant peak is 1,391 m high. The top of the hill looks like a mighty tiger, the back of hill likes wriggling dragon, and the rock is red, so the hill is also called “Tiger Head Hill”“Red Counterfort”.

Red Hill separates the Urumqi River and looked at in the distance with southwestern Yamalik Hill. It is recorded that the Urumqi River ever flood was overflowed in 1785 and in 1786 continuously, at that time, some superstitious people said that that was the dragon which was making trouble. And also side Red Hill was going to combine with the opposite Yamalik Hill, at that time, Urumqi will become into a vast expanse of water. Urumqi officer Shang An built a pagoda in the Red Hill and Yamalik Hill respectively in 1788,in order to surpress dragon. The pagoda passed 200 years wind and rain, at present still is intact basically.

After many years of development, the Red Hill has become “Red Hill Park” whose view is very beautiful. In recent years, the Statue of Lin Zexu, a national hero of the Qing Dynasty, was established, which added to the beauty of the Red Hill. Standing in the Far-Viewing Pavilion on top of the Red Hill, you can get a complete view of the city of Urumqi. The Red Hill has become a symbol of Urumqi.
